Kiwanis Club of Gainesville Scholarship Awards

The Charles J Thurmond Art Scholarship Awards are offered annually by the Gainesville Kiwanis Club in Gainesville, Georgia.

 

This scholarship awards several annual scholarships for students 9th-12th grade in three categories: writing, performing, and visual arts. A total of $15,500 is awarded each year.

Both the writing arts and preforming arts categories award $5,000 in scholarships each year in the following increments:

1st Place – $2,500

2nd Place – $1,500

3rd Place – $1,000

The visual arts category awards $5,500 in scholarships. These awards are in the following increments:

Best of Show: $2,500

1st Place – $1,500

2nd Place – $1,000

3rd Place – $500 (added in 2025!)

2025 Writing Arts Scholarship:

Entries for the 2025 Kiwanis Club of Gainesville Writing Arts Scholarship are due by March 31, 2025.

The registration fee is $10 for entries.

After paying the fee, registrants will be directed to the application form and to upload their work.

The Entry Guidelines

  1. Contestants may participate in only one writing category.  The categories are Poetry, Essay, and Short Story.
  2. The maximum length for entries is as follows:

Poetry- 200 lines

Essay-3,000 words

Short Story-3,000 words

  1. Language and themes of entries should be appropriate for the classroom.
  2. All work must be original.  Plagiarism will result in disqualification.
  3. Entries must by typed, double spaced, and in 12 pt. font. and uploaded below.
  4. The pages of the manuscript must not contain the student’s name or any other identifying information. Place only the title at the top of the first page.
  5. The pages of the manuscript must be numbered in the upper right corner.


The Finals

  1. All entries will be screened by qualified readers, and a maximum of 20 entries will be selected for the finals.
  2. The judges will select three winners to receive the scholarships awards (increments listed above).
  3. Scholarship monies will be distributed by the North Georgia Community Foundation in the form of a check issued to a college or university of the student’s choice, after their high school graduation.
